Default Contour cut-line in CorelDraw

For those of you creating digital prints with Corel, what methods are you using for generating the contour cut-line? The way I've been doing it, for lack of a better idea, is to do an interactive contour, then give that a no fill and then add a hairline outline - is that the way to do it?

How do you do it when you need a full-bleed graphic contour cut? I guess you'd put an interactive contour of the same color as the graphic, then give the original a hairline outline. Seems like this could be cumbersome if you have multiple colors going on.

I know that programs such as Flexi will do it as well, but I'm looking specifically at Corel for the moment. I thought I saw some instructions somewhere, but can't remember where.

Also wondering how you make it so it doesn't print, do you just assign it a specific color and the RIP knows not to print it? Thanks!

Chris,

I do all my contours in flexi because its SOOOO much easier. Corel generally puts in way to many nodes.

As for the contour lines. You set them to hairline and set the hairline to a spot color called CutPath. The Rip will display anything this color as a cutline and not print it.

This is how ColorRip works, not sure how Versaworks does it since I have never used versaworks.

I too will most likely be using Corel, although I also have Flexi Pro. So I am interested in the most practical method.
Is this similar to what I have been doing with my ColorCamm?
I create a contour (cut line) with a thickness of .004, (In my case, I use yellow) and use the "cut by line type" option.

HI Chris.
Barry's got it. Choose any colour you want, set to hairline, spot color and call it cut path. My problem happens when I contour some text with another colour, can't seem to get the cut path recognized on the contoured color.
The contour has a pen color and a fill color..I set them with the pen as cut path colour and the fill as whatever. Just not getting it...

I've been working with someone to develop a VB function to perform this operation. I have a BETA right now, and it is definitely a step in the right direction.

Onyx and Flexi are looking for the spot color to be named CutContour. Exactly like that, with that capitolization.

Not sure on versaworks.

My cutter does not cut in the same proportions as the print. This throws the pattern off some and I have to adjust for each row.

If I need to avoid white borders I make a large background color the same as my graphic and cut inside that. I also look at the other colors of a graphic and make my line a different color. Pink works real well. Double check for hair line or the cutter will be even futher off.

If you are using a resin printer, use a white cutline.

Default Cut Contour

In VersaWorks the spot color must be named 'CutContour', just as I typed, no spaces, and Capital C's. In ColorRip, it must be named 'CutPath'. If you are using Adobe Illustrator, or Pagemaker, or Quark, there are Swatches incuded on the VersaWorlks software CD in a folder called 'Spot Color Library', just drop into appropriate folder and voila.

VersaWorks recognizes both spot colors (CutPath, CutContour) as cut line.
