I'm in the market to get more software to add to my flexi8.5. Adobe or corel is the 2 I'm I'm deciding between. Is one really better than the other. I need something to work on wraps & all types of print work. I know Adobe cost more but let's pretend they are the same price which would you choose & why. I know alot of you have preferances to so let me hear it. Thanks for any input.

If you are going to be working with 'professionals' (unlike us- the great unwashed masses) I would go for AI. It is pretty much the industry standard.
DISCLAIMER: I have never gotten comfortable with AI and use it only to open files that Flexi won't and have never used Corel- which many people are crazy about but I believe to be a lower cost substitute. |

Corel is an outstanding program at a much lower price than Illustrator. But, no matter what, if you receive files from clients, chances are you'll need Illustrator anyway just to open what they give you. I work exclusively in Corel Draw, but I do have a copy of Illustrator simply for opening files. It's a complete waste, and I don't like using it, but it is a necessary tool. I learned how to use Corel Draw first, which is probably why it's my preference. Illustrator's workflow just doesn't make sense to me.

There used to be an Adobe program where you could sign up to be an "Adobe Authorized Provider". I sent in 2 examples of the type of work we were doing for approval. Once approved, you could buy a Mac version and a PC version of the Creative Suite for $600 US. An additional $600 a year gives you free upgrades and upgraded technical support. I never felt compelled to continue the program after receiving the software however.

full disclosure - i don't use or know corel at all. I use ai every day and have gotten quite used to it.
Sounds to me like corel is less $$$ and still fully capable...except that +90% of the industry uses adobe products exclusively. So then you seem to need a copy of ai anyway. Might as well just learn ai and follow along with the masses.

If you plan on working with agencies or other printers i would invest in a MAC and the complete CS 3 package. Its a big investment at first, but Adobe CS is where its at.

Adobe. Period. Im biased, thats what I was taught in school, and its what I have stuck with. Illustrator isnt that hard once you get used to it, and your local community college may offer a class to get you through the learning curve.
Lynda.com is a great training resource as well. I used to teach Adobe products for a technical college and we used Lynda.com as supplimentary information for students who were really struggling with the programs. Robb |
