I apologize if this sounds dumb, but, assuming I call today, and buy the software, what else is it I'm needing to profile my media?

I, too, have a question. I have an EyeOne Proof, which supposedly will allow me to create my media profiles (I've still not made one yet), but what will this software offer that I cannot do, but need/should be doing? Further, which software would be of use to me in a normal everyday-type sign-shop with no aspirations of artwork reproduction or the like?

I use the Eye-One with Eye1Match 3.6 to produce output profiles for Versaworks and Onyx...couldn't be happier with it!

You'd gain the ability to measure color in different ways. For example i've mentioned on this board how to do ink restrictions based on saturation (chroma) instead of the more conventional density approach. You can also average multiple readings, edit profiles (if you really need to), and most of all - customize the way the icc mixes CMY relative to K. The EyeOne packages give you presets to control these variables. With the pro level software you can control when K starts to get used, how aggressively it replaces CMY, and how much K you'll allow as a max. You can also contol how much Total Ink goes down for the darkest blacks (as a mix of CMYK). In other words - you can fine tune the icc behavior and get the best mix for you printer. The presets are close, but not quite as refined as we'd like.

YOur EyeOne package is likely fine for simple needs. Don't get too worked up about these additional features. Then again, i wouldn't run my shop without them - but i'm a freak.
