Was told by the Onyx tech today that ProductionHouse doesn't support print / laminate / cut. Please, somebody tell me it isn't so!! If there's a work-around, I'd love to hear it. Otherwise, I've loaded VersaWorks on my computer today and will start to learn that software & go that route. Would rather jsut stick to one RIP though if at all possible. Any ideas? Thanks.

I don't understand? Do you mean print, take it out of the printer, laminate it, then stick it in the cutter?
If so, sure it does. CutServer would drive the roland as a cut machine only. Am i missing something?

Yes.... print, remove, laminate, re-insert, and then contour cut thry the laminate and the ABV. I too was puzzled when the tech from Onyx said that they couldn't do it. Maybe he was thinking ONLY of ProductionHouse and didn't think of CutServer. I haven't used Onyx CutServer yet so I need to learn it. Any pointers to get me started? Thanks.

After talking w Onyx tech support this morning, looks like Onyx CutServer v2 doesn't support the Roland SC-545ex. To do the print, laminate, contour cut that I have in mind, looks like I'll need to switch over to Versaworks for this job. Onyx says they're working on enabling this machine w v2.

Ah. Cutserver 2 doesn't work with my USB Mimaki cutter either. I bet if you go to v1 you'll be fine.

Anything but versaworks, Pleeeeeeeeeease. Though, I've had pretty good luck with it. Anybody having problems with it just shutting down on its own when you get the queue pretty full?

I thought about trying CutServer V1 but there's a reason that the SC545ex was removed from V2. The Onyx tech (Larry - one of the more experrienced guys there) said they had lots of communications problems between CutServer V1 & SC545ex. I'll try it though and see if I can make some progress. If still no luck, then I'll go back to figuring out Versaworks but it sounds like that way's a little sticky too. Thanks for the input guys. Will let you know what I find out.

Larry Howard I assume...just had him in my shop last week. I have a job sitting on my 545 that I printed today that I'm laminating in the morning and then cutting. I'll let you know how it goes...sure hope it works as I have to install it tomorrow as well =)

Just make sure you have your cut paths setup properly with a spot color and with a name that matches what you have set in your quicket. Then actually make sure that you choose that quickset when queueing the file. Unfortunately I have learned, as Shakespeare wrote, they stumble that do run fast. I rushed through some files and didn't pick the right quickset, took the print over to my Graphtec to cut and guess what...NO XML file for CutServer. That's no fun...so don't do that. It's quite simple really, just open CutServer, after you've picked your cut device, etc, just open the XML with the matching code to your print and cut it. There's some rough instructions....nothing formal, with screenshots.

I'm up to speed on using spot colors in Illustrator to make CutContour lines. Where I was struggling at first was getting Onyx CutServer configured. Eventually found out that the SC545ex isn't supported. So plan B is to do printing & cutting in VW. From the manual it seems straightforward. I'll let you know too.
