Unhappy Versaworks 2 - Won't Run

Hi All
Wonder if anyone else has experienced this problem and can suggest a cure. The other day Versaworks found an update and downloaded and installed version 2.02. Then all heck broke loose. The first error message was that the language version was incorrect did I want to use English. Then on start up it said that the dongle was not present or the printer was not connected so I should initialize. So I did reluctantly because the last time i had to initialize I lost all my pre-ripped files which was a pain. After initializing Vworks advised me that I did not have a supported device attached. What the heck is this nonsense. Am I going to have to re-install Vworks to get running again? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anytime you do a major update, you lose the jobs in the que because there are new profiles downloaded with the update. No big deal. Sounds like all you have to do now is re-verify the printer under printer settings(type in IP Address and click verify).

Tried all that but still can't find the printer. Even set a static IP address for the server box and re - ran the IP setup tool and it told me the software - Versaworks did not support my device (printer).

What version is your firmware, and is your machine converted to Max inks yet?

You say that it gave you an error that it could not find the dongle. What dongle are you using because every version of Versaworks I know of does not have a dongle.

Also, when an upgrade is performed for Versaworks and the profiles etc, everything you have in the queue from before is cleared out. That should not be a problem.

What IP address have you got your VersaCamm set to. Can you go to a command prompt (Start / Run / cmd then enter) and ping the IP address of the printer. ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx and then enter. Does it find the printer, what message do you get.

Also, check what the IP address settings are for your PC that you are using. From the command prompt, type in ipconfig /all and enter.

Also, if everything looks okay, then open up your internet explorer window and type in the IP address of the printer and press enter. It should come up with a Roland page with all the details for your printer. You can choose the language, but English should be the default. Then check the TCP/IP settings to make sure it is on the same subnet etc as your PC with an IP address in the same range.

Also, this has just struck me. If the machine is powered off at the switch below the Ethernet card on the side, you will not find it on the network. The mains power needs to be on even if the secondary power is off.

Checked all those things. The printer is never off just in sleep mode. I move the media roller lever to the down position eveytime before I start the rip just to ensure communication. All hardware is on the same subnet. As for the dongle, there is one it is built into the printer apparently and is not a seperate unit like other rips. Everything was running fine until this upgrade. Can't understand why it asks if I want to use the default language English and why when i use the ip setup tool it verifies the address for the printer but says it is not a supported device.

Was VersaWorks configured to download for All Available Printers? Go to the Start menu, All Programs, and select the Roland Folder. You'll see an online update button. Click it and then select the check for updates option. This will retrieve any updates missed earlier. Then retry.

Huh found the problem. The upgrade to Vworks 2 actually happened but instead of overwriting the earlier version Vworks 2 installs itself in a seperate sub directory so when I click on the desktop icon which nothing goes. Would have been nice if they just overwrote the old files or at least dropped a new icon on the desktop. Dumbest install I have ever seen.
As for performance VW 2 is still a flaky piece of junk. So I am shopping for either Postershop or Flexi which I know from past experience run reliably.
Anyway thanks to all for your suggestions and letting me vent a little bit, it was a tough week, the orders finally started rolling in and VW gave me grief the whole time.
