Digital Flames Volume One Review Digital Flames Volume One Review
Barry
03-11-2006

Masters Touch/Barry Branscum from DigitalFlames.net has sent us over a copy of his Digital Flames Collection Volume One for review here on the site. Although I do very little design work I was happy that he sent one our way, there is just a coolness factor to digital flames that is hard to resist.

The collection of digital fire comes professionally packaged on a DVD complete with DVD case covered in the flames from the disk.

Whats on the disk?
  • 36 images of flames in Adobe Photoshop .PSD format
  • Same 36 images in .eps format
  • Cut paths for each of the 36 images in .eps format
  • Image Gallery in .HTML format (great for picking out which flame to use)
  • Introduction Document with helpful tips
You can see thumbnail examples of each of the clip art images by clicking here.

How big are the images?
The images vary in size, but are all at 300ppi. All images are big enough that they can be printed EXTREMELY large without any noticeable quality loss.

The power of the images
The power of the images is that they are provided in a layered photoshop (.PSD) files. This allows you to modify the flames to your liking. You want green flames instead of red, no problem just adjust the color of the flame layer. If you want to tile the flames just copy and paste that layer. You are only limited by your imagination. Since there is a large variety of flame types and looks you can make the perfect flame for each job.

Limitations of the images
By nature with this type of flame contour cuts can not be made right on the edge of the flame like you are use to with standard clip art flames. This means that if you want to put a flame on a vehicle you will need to match the color of the vehicle as your contour cut will not be right on the edge of the flame. Personally I find that encapsulating the flames inside of an object an easy way to avoid having to color match. Below is a perfect example done by one of our members (JDW) on his Roland Versacamm.

How do the images look in person
The digital flames have that airbrushed flame look that is so popular right now. They look great from a distance or up close. The flames do look best on dark colors though.

Conclusion
The digital flames included on this DVD defiantly have a coolness factor that no other flame clipart can compete with. This is the type of artwork that can set you apart from your competition. At $349.95(About $10 per image) it is very likely that this DVD will be paid off the first time you use it. Personally I can not wait for volume two to be released and see what else Barry has up his sleeves.
