Default Charge for graphic work

Hi everyone,

Let's just say someone comes in and wants a banner and has an idea but no artwork. You spend about 15 minutes designing the banner and they want to change it. You change it and they want to change it again. You've been there, I have been there. What do you charge for the design time and how many revisions do you do before an extra charge sets in.

Thank you,
Craig

I don't charge an hourly design rate. I quote a fixed price for the design work. With that the client gets 1 round of AA's (Author's Alternations). Additional rounds of changes are charged at a minimum of $30 with a max of $120 per hour for changes. It is a rare job that goes through more than 2 rounds of changes (1 free and 1 paid).

Oh and I forgot to mention that I get half up front before doing anything, and half on delivery.

We do the first design(a thumbnail sketch) for free. This is generally a quick layout that I call a point of departure. I show it to the client & invite them to sit with me at the computer & refine the layout. For this I charge $75 per hr & I'm happy to spend as much time as needed to get it just the way they want it. You'd be surprised how quickly someone can decide what they want when they know the meter is running at $75 per hr. It is rare that the refining of a layout takes more than 1hr & the client feels real ownership of the design when the process is done. I almost always sell the job on the spot.

We charge $75 an hour design time, unless we just drop their logo in, or change a few words. Something minor we won't charge the customer
