You'd think they could've given you a BIT more time than 4 days!
Now tell me those trailers were already black and that's red vinyl lettering.... please..... |

Nope nothing was black. Thats full print. The Jager orange is a custom color that had to be matched dead nuts not a PMS no CMYK callout. Nothing you see is cut vinyl just a pure print square footage. As far as the turnaround, Thats what we do... It's exciting to pull them off.

I'm curious how they defined the color for you? How did you know when you'd gotten it right?

We have been printing for this client for years. They gave us a corporate match proof to work from. Matched color, got approval etc..etc..
Tons of corporations have propritory colors that are not PMS calls. Mix and match in 5000k viewing area and solid profiles for medias and machines usually eliminate the headaches unless it's Verizon or Cingular (those are an extreme challenge and they are wicked picky) |

Do you have your own spectrophotometer?
If so, use it to measure the match proof color directly into your RIP. Name the color in the RIP library for spot colors and name the color the same in the file. Voila! super precise (as long as your output profiles are as you say "solid") One tiny detail is the color in the file needs to be defined as a spot, not process color.

We have both Eye One and Xrite with both profiling bundles. We have invested alot of time and $$ in color managment. So I understand wher your going with your reply. However most match proofs are glossy, Grand format outputs are uncoated, The gloss sheen of matchprint is not an accurate read. Throw in the fact we usually have the same client utilizing different output
devices (LightJets are RGB photo, 4/C jv3 prints, flatbed UV 4/C direct prints). They all have to match.... We rely on profiles per media and print mode and reading the output devices color gamut. 90% of our workflow is in RGB to get the broadest color gamut. All of our print rooms have 3 way lighting so you can view outputs either in regular lighting, Flouresent lighting or natural lighting 5000k. You would be amazed at what a difference the different lighting environments change the color. I could go on for hours about this stuff. Making quality prints is what we all do. The color management is an evolving science and technology that amazes me. |
