Wizard, most of what I print is indoor short term so I print on a Calendared vinyl from Media One, and laminate with a DR Graphics matte finish laminate. When the prints will only be up for 3 to 6 months I'm not to worried about using really expensive stuff. The vinyl from Media one has a really good adhesive and that was one of my main concerns.

Barry, ran the mall just under $2700.00 for both the print and the cut vinyl. Not to bad for under $300 worth of material, ink and a few hours of labor. I have done a whole bunch of really large prints for the malls that I work for so I have them down pretty good.

That is some pretty good profit for the amount of time spent. I should wish I could get some jobs like that.

You said you have done lots of mall work -- don't you get asked for smoke and flame cert's? I would love to use cheap vinyl but there are laws about this stuff - especially for public indoor areas. All my research suggests that you can't just hang banner material on a wall --needs to be made for wall application and needs to pass certain federal tests. Maybe it is just in my state - but I don't think so.. I am going to do some research on this - perhaps I am just being ****.

These guys are using vinyl not banner.. I have not heard of flame resistant vinyls.

I have never been asked about flame rating on vinyl. My experience with MSDS and flame spread is most of the people have no idea how to read the data sheet. I know that there is a Life Safety 101 plan that says any building material must have a certain flame spread and smoke developlment. The only time i have ever heard that mentioned was with banner material. I'm not to sure that is really pushed to much either. One of the mall groups (General Growth) I work with changes out banners that hang in most of their mall almost monthly. The banner stock looks like normal smooth 13oz.

Okay. I will look into it on my end... I am fairly certain there are a different set of rules regarding installation to a wall vs. a simple banner... So although you are printing on a banner material, once you fix it to a wall the game changes... I have some experience in wallpaper and wallcovering markets, and I know for example that murals which are applied to a wall need to follow the same guidelines the wallpaper industry has been following for years. The fact that it is dig printed doesn't change anything. The material I buy for murals talks about this need - I think the dig industry just isn't aware of the rules -- yet...
