Question Hewlett Packard Designjet Z3100

Is anyone using this printer?

Based on what I've read on the company website, I'm having a hard time differentiating between the postscript and non postscript versions.

I understand that both have an onboard spectrophotometer, but do they both offer automated profiling capabilities?

Generally, the postscript version allows you to print directly from Illustrator or Corel. Non postscript demands a RIP. A RIP will give you greater control and speed also.
You already have a 5500 and 5000ps? Aren't you already familiar with the postscript features?

Understood.

But what about the profiling features relative to each model?

I have the z2100 without ps and print from Corel with no issues. Vector and Bitmap files.

Profiling is very easy. It is automated and does an excelent job.

If you need to do a lot of profiling get a rip external spectro and a non ps version. If you dont and are printing on mainly HP medias save some $$ and go with the PS version.

You need the PS version to enable to the onboard spectro for ICC profiles, otherwise it will just act as a colorimeter for linearization. PS also enables you to print directly from AI, PS, and other applications direct instead of routing through a 3rd party RIP. The automatic profiling features on the Z-series are really cool and VERY accurate, so definitely get the PS. Otherwise, non-ps with HP's Advanced Profiling Software and that'll do the trick too.

If you have a proper RIP, you do ps.

I had one in the shop for a year, and it as non ps. It created profiles, but we could only use them through photoshop with the HP profile management software. Our sales rep told us that if we had the PS version, wou could export the profile information we generated and use them elsewhere. What does that mean? I think he was referring to the ICC it self and not the other components of the profile.

FWIW: I found that HP is very honest in their statement that the Z3100 is NOT a production printer. We killed it.
